THE BIG SCOW
This variant of the scow design has been prepared for someone who wants a scow, but bigger, for cruising.
See plan and profile drawing
See sailplan
This really is just a standard scow scaled up by 1.33! This means it is too wide to make out of a single sheet of ply, so the hull design may change a bit (I haven't got there yet). I suspect it will have to become a shallow vee-bottom.
The inefficient lug sail is replaced with a gunter. This moves the mast forward a bit, which is good for accommodating the crew.
For the interior of the boat:
- Side benches/tanks have been incorporated (as in the camping scow). Because of the size of the big scow, these benches are a good width and height, providing luxurious space for four crew. As in the camping scow, the leeboard pivots are reinforced by two small frames connecting to bulkheads below.
- As this design is for an American, a stowage for a cooler is included just aft of the mast - my local knowledge of American sailing is good enough to know that it is not legal to sail a boat in American waters without a cooler onboard!
(For Brits and others, coolers are actually an excellent storage locker - cheap, watertight, durable and easily removable so you can pack/unpack them at home.)
- At night there are four bunks. The two in the bow are at the height of the bow tank and need a large 'platform' to extend of the bow tank back to the leeboard pivot frames. The two at the back are at the height of the side benches and are made by adding an infill panel between the benches. There is a useful area of open hull bottom between the fore and aft bunks to allow you to put your trousers on in comfort.
