THE LONG SCOW

This variant of the scow design has been prepared for someone interested in a longer scow and wants to use it in sheltered coastal waters.

The changes to the scow hull are fairly radical:

The midship section, aside from the increased freeboard, is unchanged and the bottom panel is still limited by being the width of one sheet of ply. The result is a fairly long (4700 - 15ft 5in) boat with a narrow beam for its length. With the same beam as the standard scow, it will not have much more stability with which to carry more sail.

So there are no changes to the rig and only minor changes to the leeboards and rudder. The leeboards have been lengthened slightly to allow for the greater freeboard, but have the same underwater profile. The depth of the rudder blade has been increased slightly to control the longer boat and the tiller has been lengthened to suit the longer stern.

The longer boat will probably sail a little faster than the standard scow - although it has more surface area to create drag, the longer, smoother hullform will make less hull drag and result in better speed.
