The Scow Leeboards

Here is the leeboard out of the boat:

From right to left in the photo is:

  • the pull-down string;
  • the pull-up shock cord;
  • the stop bar;
  • the pivot pin;
  • the washers and the fast pin that locks the pivot pin.

Note that everything that can fall off is drilled for a retaining line (fishing line).

Here is the leeboard in the 'up' position on the boat:

Note:

  • The pull-up shock cord is holding up the leeboard quite hard - the knot in the pull-down string is pulled hard against the cam-cleat - the position of the knot governs where the 'up' position of the board is.
  • The cam-cleat is the type with a roller that holds the string in place, so it is ready when needed;
  • There is no variation in the 'down' position of the leeboard - it is where the stop pin hits the short length of rubbing strip on the gunwhale - so the pull-down string is an on-off control and the board is either up or down;
  • Three holes exist for the leeboard pivot pin so the the balance of the boat could be corrected if I got the leeboard position wrong - pride dictates that I point that I didn't get it wrong!
